SDN Event: Ted Neward – Busy Developer’s Guide to NodeJS

SDN EVent - Ted Neward II

Last Sunday we published the third recorded session from our October SDN Event. It was the second session by Ted Neward titled “Busy Developer’s Guide to NodeJS”. If you (still) don’t know Ted, more reason to watch, he’s a real storyteller and has no problems to hold your attention for the full hour. A joy to listen and learn at the same time.

Abstract

The circle, as they say, is complete. JavaScript underwent a significant shift in thinking recently, from a "browser-only" language to a language that’s increasingly seen as a server-side execution system. In some cases, a JavaScript engine is embedded inside a larger server program, such as what we see with different NoSQL databases (MongoDB, CouchDB), but now, with the increasing popularity of NodeJS, as a server itself. In this presentation, we’re going to take a hard look at NodeJS, from installing it through using it write a variety of different server programs. No longer is JavaScript just a user-interface tool.

SDN Cast 70 – SDN, Microsoft and Google Event News

image

Due to the third SDN Event last week on Friday October 6th we were a day early with our weekly Dutch SDN Cast. Usually we broadcast on Thursday but this week we had to shift things a bit, so we broadcasted on Wednesday. As usual we pick up our foreign speakers from the airport the day before the SDN Event and bring them to their hotel to stay the night.

You can’t ask the presenters to travel large distances all on one day, can’t you? For this reason, we moved the SDN Cast a day earlier and didn’t skip the web cast because you don’t want to miss the weekly news either don’t you agree? News just goes on and on, SDN Event or not.

And news there was … a lot of it! Besides the annual hardware event by Google there was the Microsoft Mixed Reality event the day before. Would it be a coincidence? Microsoft’s event was completely focused on Mixed Reality announcements. Some sort of a special on Mixed Reality headsets, HoloLens and MR software.

Other than the already announced headsets Microsoft this event showed off the new Samsung Mixed Reality headset that will become available soon. But more important was the vision Microsoft showed us with regards to the Mixed Reality future developments. All available in the soon to be released Fall Creators Update.

With this Fall Creators Update Microsoft will also include the Windows Mixed Reality home – the Cliff House. In this virtual space you can move and design the spaces with your apps and holograms.

Another thing that was announced is that Microsoft acquired AltSpaceVR and the SteamVR catalog will soon be available from the Mixed Reality world of Windows. Currently already available for developers in Preview.

Somewhat later, the day after, Google held its annual hardware event. Many of the details already leaked as we discussed last week, but now we officially were introduced to the announcements and no need to speculate over the details. A whole slew of new devices, the new Pixel 2, Google Home, Google Buds, Google Clips and the new Chromebook to name a few.

For both events I’ve added the links in the show notes below in this article so you can go back and watch the events again.

We haven’t decided yet what day we will go live with SDN Cast 71, maybe again on Wednesday but another option is live from the TechDays event in Amsterdam. Go to www.sdncast.nl for more information on the exact date and time.

As usual we are always looking for presenters for our own events and Meetup’s so if you want to share something about hot technologies or just about something you implemented at work or in an App that could be interesting to our audience let us know so we can schedule you for one or our next SDN events or Dutch .NET Group Meetups.

This off course also goes for if you want to write a great article for us to publish in our SDN Magazines or at our SDN Website. The downside of publishing a magazine article is that there can be sometime between writing the article and publishing the magazine. So, if it is time critical sometimes the best option is to publish it on the www.sdn.nl website to get more speedy attention to the article.

As you see, options enough to address your audience with top notch information. You can even, if you like, be our guest in our SDN Cast shows to discuss the projects you are working on or other topics you master. We will instruct you how to connect with us and what it is you need to join the show.

Hopefully we will see you at our weekly web cast, for the schedule go to www.sdncast.nl for next week’s announcement to find out the day and time of our next broadcast or go to www.sdncast.nl/youtube to watch old episodes and videos that we recorded at our events. SDN Cast 68 – DotNETConf en Google leaks

SDNCast 68-800

Conference season obviously started and the big three (Microsoft, Google and Apple) pop out events shortly after each other anxiously trying to be the first to come with new hardware announcements. Apple last week presented their new iPhones, at the end of October it is expected that Microsoft will come forward with -their- hardware announcements (although there is also the rumor that there will be another event in the middle of the month) and Google is planned for October 4th.

This week unexpected information was published about the hardware Google most likely planned to show at their October 4th event and probably not-amused to see all their scoops in a web post from one of the tech journalists. The new Pixel 2 devices, the new Google Pixelbook, a smaller smart speaker Google Home Mini and the new edition of their Daydream View VR headset.

Another one on the long list of upcoming events was DotNETConf online this week where Microsoft gave us an update on their development tools. An overview of what is going on with Visual Studio, Xamarin and Visual Studio Code, their light weight editor. Also updates on their languages and what is going on in the cloud with Azure.

We discussed it all in our weekly Dutch SDN Cast together with the news of the week, the rumors of tomorrow and the events on schedule. If you master the Dutch language go on over and watch the Dutch episode (on a weekly base so don’t forget to subscribe!) and in an hour you are completely up to date!

SDN Cast 67 – Apple Event and Windows Insider Previews

image

Another promising week with lots of information to share. A few Windows Insider Previews – for both Redstone 3 (Fall Creators Update) and Redstone 4 (vNext) but also the big Apple Event of the year where they announce all their new hardware stuff. This year Apple Watch 3, Apple TV, iPhone 8 and iPhone X saw the light and we discussed it all in our Dutch SDN Cast this week. Was it all new they presented? Is it all innovation?

Outside this big event we also talk about the news items of the week. The announcement of the new Windows Developer Day in London, transferring NuGet services to Microsoft, Team guest access, translating VS Code and much, much more (the links from the show are below).

So, if you understand Dutch, watch the recording of our 67th SDN Cast from this week!

SDN Cast 64 – Live at 8 with C# 8 and Android 8

clip_image002

Lucky 8, this week is themed number 8 … We are broadcasting the Dutch SDN Cast 8 squared = 64, Mads Torgersen was interviewed by Seth Juarez on C# 8 discussing features like Nullable Reference Types, Async Streams, Default Interface Implementations and Extension Everything. C# 8 is still in the planning phase but as with previous releases Mads shares the things the C# team are thinking about to put in the next release. Features obviously may be dropped or can be changed for the final release but the recording shares a lot of new stuff with the public already.

Also, Android 8 aka Android Oreo was released this week. Another 8 for us to consume. The Dutch Android site is still on Android Nougat but setting the locale to United States changes the site to Oreo.

Another big thing this week is Gamescom, where Microsoft opened the pre-order for Xbox X aka Xbox Project Scorpio. With this Xbox is opened for any games developer. Xbox used to be closed for development unless you were one of the certified game developers. This restriction is now lifted and only thing you need is a Dev Center account that you can purchase for $20 one-time fee.

Another demo this week, this time Skype integration on your website with two lines of code. How to easily put Skype interaction on your site, to living persons or even bots.

SDN Cast 63 – New SDN magazine and .NET Standard 2.0

SDNCast 63-800

Theme of the week in our Dutch SDN Cast was .NET and .NET Standard. .NET Standard 2.0 was released this week, you could already read about it in my ‘special’ post earlier this week. There was a whole set of releases: .NET Standard 2.0, .NET Core 2.0, Entity Framework Core 2.0, Visual Studio 2017 Version 15.3 and more …

We discussed not only the new releases but also other news like adding VB to the .NET Core CLI, new Apple betas, Xbox Live Creators Program and more. Despite the holidays low season, a lot of news to talk about!

Also, this week the release of our new Dutch SDN Magazine, ready for download. The download links are in the show notes below. Dutchies, go ahead and download it today!

SDN Cast 62 – Release flavors

clip_image002

In our Dutch SDN Cast 62 we discuss several releases of frameworks and tools. But things tend to get confusing these days. We see RTM, Release to Manufacturer or is it Release to Market. Candidates for Release with RCs – Release Candidates, Early Access, (General) Availability, Beta or Final. And then there are the Insider Programs with their release flight rings. The Xbox release flights are called Preview Alpha, Preview Beta, Preview Delta and Preview Omega …

Does it get weirder than this? We’ll see … at least there is something released.

Brady Gaster – Getting Started building Visual Studio Code Extensions

This Sunday our second recorded session went live that we recorded at our June SDN Event in Zeist (NL). Last week we had the keynote by Richard Campbell but this week is the first session of two by Brady Gaster:

https://youtu.be/3CryYLD8758

SDN Event Brady Gaster-800

Visual Studio Code has been getting a lot of positive attention in our industry since its introduction. The small install size and speed of the product make it an attractive option for developers who want a better coding tool, but where VS Code really shines is in its ability to allow developers to extend it. In this session, you’ll be introduced to the idea of developing extensions for Visual Studio Code, walk through a few demos and get a glimpse of the object model in the product so that when you have an idea that begins with "I wish Visual Studio Code could…" you’ll have the knowledge and information you need to dive in and make the best little coding tool around do whatever you want.

We had Brady in our SDN Cast show number 36 last year where he introduced us to the Azure Tools for Visual Studio Code for the first time. This was a great introduction and we asked him to join us at our SDN Event and were very happy that he agreed to jump in to fly over all the way from Microsoft’s Seattle Area to our little country.

So here it is, his first session at the event – the second will follow in two weeks so stay tuned! Click the link above to watch the session in its full length.

You can even go over to Brady’s GitHub account to get the PowerPoint and notes for the session:

https://github.com/bradygaster/extending-vscode-talk

And if you still have questions, just ping him at Twitter account @bradygaster

There was only one thing that disappointed me, and that was that we didn’t even found time to discuss the musician in him. I’m a bass player myself so I’m sad we didn’t bring this up … oh well, a good reason to invite him again some other time Winking smile. A very social friendly guy and a pleasure to work with!

SDN Event – Richard Campbell – Keynote: The Development Platform Landscape in 2017

SDNCast 55-800

Last Friday June 23rd we managed to pull off our second SDN Event of 2017 and we recorded a couple of our sessions so if you couldn’t make it or had other reasons not to attend you still can watch the session online.

Abstract:
Join Richard Campbell as he takes you on a tour of the broad range of subjects explored while recording more than 1400 episodes of .NET Rocks over the past 10+ years. The development world today is evolving rapidly, but a look at the history of development can help inform the path we’re on and where we’re going. Along the way you’ll hear some great stories from the various .NET Rocks episodes and get some ideas of how you can take your career and your company into the future of technology.

SDN Cast 53 – ARM, CShell, WWDC and news week 23

SDNCast 53-800

Developments are going fast, according to the rumors from the market that is. There already was the pre-recorded video at Build 2017 about Windows on ARM, this weeks announcement by Qualcomm on full Windows 10 PCs running on its Snapdragon 835 ARM processor with built-in LTE for “Always Connected” devices (https://www.qualcomm.com/news/onq/2017/05/31/windows-10-running-snapdragon-835-mobile-pc-platform-unveiled-computex).

Intel quickly followed with a statement suggesting that certain 3rd parties might have been using their patents without their consent.

At the same time videos appeared online showing the new Windows interface called CShell. CShell has options to scale the user interface depending on the device the applications are running on. A smaller device will adapt to a mobile like interface where on full scale systems all details will emerge. All devices will get their most optimized view.

Overall it seems that a new Windows mobile devices is rising but not with Windows Mobile but with the full version of Windows that will also be running on full PC ARM devices as mentioned above. Devices have been announced, in the official prerecorded video by Microsoft and also in other videos to be arriving Q4 this year already! In other words, ready for Holiday Season 2017…

Besides speculating on this, we also discussed the news items presented at the Apple Developer Conference WWDC 2017. We are talking about the new devices, upgrades to the iMac Pro, HomePod, AIKit APIs and more. So our Dutch speaking viewers get updated in about an hour on the latest news and event updates.

If you are in the neighborhood also don’t forget that our next SDN Event is close. At June 23rd we will have our second SDN Event this year with, as always, a great set of sessions and speakers. A slightly changed program this time, we will start with a generic keynote by Richard Campbell. After that the regular sessions start.
